It is harder than particleboard or hardboard, and can be cut like plywood although itisn't as strong as plywood. Some MDF is covered withmelamine which is a durable plastic in a variety of colors.The exposed edges of MDF are rough and need covering withmolding or some other decorative material.

Technically, furniture made from all of these wood productsis "real" wood furniture, even the composites. * Primer
* Wallpaper adhesive (optional)
* Vinyl-to-vinyl adhesive
* 6 double-acting hinges with hardware
* Sandpaper
* Tack cloth
* Crafts knife
* Straightedge or ruler
* Awl
* Screwdriver or drill with screwdriver bit

Instructions:

1. Sand and prime doors. Sand doors and wipe clean. Apply two coats of primer, sanding lightly between coats.

2. Add main wallpaper. Cover entire door with main paper (in this example, solid blue), following manufacturer's directions. Fold corners gift-wrap style and wrap to back. Cut piece exact same size as door and apply to back, covering wrapped edges. Repeat with the other two doors.

3. Add contrasting border. Cover top 8 to 10 inches in same manner using contrasting paper. Cut border to be used as stripes to fit from bottom of top border to bottom of door. Apply to door with vinyl-to-vinyl adhesive. Add horizontal border to cover joint between top border and stripes. Repeat for the other two doors.

4. Add hinges. Set screens on floor in upright position with right sides facing same direction. Use paint cans, concrete blocks, or other heavy items to keep the screens upright. Mark positions of hinges, spacing them evenly. Install three hinges on each pair of doors according to package directions, making sure screen sits level.

5. If necessary, plane door bottoms so they are perfectly level.

* Fulfill several storage tasks. Walk-in pantries are popular where space allows. "You can even put your broom and dust mop in them, so they're taking the place of other closets," Scott says. A door will conceal clutter.
* Let a shallow pantry serve you well. Shallow shelves make it more difficult to "hide" items behind other items, so you can see at a glance what's on hand.

* Install pullout shelves and drawers. Instead of reaching to the back of deep, immobile shelves, pull shelves and drawers toward you for easier access.
* Arrange items so labels are visible. Scott recommends storing cans one deep and on their sides in shallow drawers so you can easily view the labels. This also works well for spice containers, which often fall over when placed on a turntable, Winner says.

Organizing Contents
* Group similar items. Winner says grouping items by size may sometimes use space more efficiently but may cut down on accessibility.
* Contain small items. Put items such as seasoning packets, small cans, and single-serving snack packages in movable bins or slide-out baskets so they don't slip behind other items and get lost.
* Be transparent. See-through containers and wire baskets let you easily determine the contents. Or use labels, which will help you locate items -- and encourage you to put them back in the proper place.
* Accommodate kids. Store approved snacks, breakfast foods, bowls, and cups at a height easy for kids to reach. That way, they can safely help themselves.

With the nature of business today the cost of producing complex hand-crafted mosaic coffee tables, either made with inlays of slices of wood with alternating patterned shades, or ceramic-tile based table top surfaces, has become prohibitive. One may still purchase machine manufactured tables like this, with a less pleasing effect, or one could import such furniture from places like Pakistan and India at great expense. Stuff that seems to multiply overnight, such as bills, recyclables, and rubber bands. Fortunately, there are plenty of solutions to help you store your stuff -- and quickly retrieve it. Check out the following custom cabinetry ideas, easy-to-install products, no-install containers, and tips about organizing that will help whip your kitchen into shape.

1. Bring the pantry closer to you. A pullout pantry system has wire shelf sides that prevent items from falling out and allow easy viewing of the contents. Pullout pantry systems, especially those that extend into toe-kick space near the floor, must be installed perfectly level and plumb to operate smoothly.

2. Take cabinets to the top. If you're planning for new cabinetry, choose designs that reach the ceiling rather than those topped by a soffit. Although high-rise storage is more difficult to reach, it can conveniently conceal infrequently used items.

3. Specify upper cabinets that rest on the countertop. Shelves positioned between your shoulders and waist require no reaching to store stacks of dinnerware.

4. Shift dry goods into airtight, stackable containers. Often, packaged food products can be stored more compactly when transferred from their packaging into stacking containers.

5. Install a wire wall grid to keep kitchen tools handy. Turn a bare section of wall into a hook-and-hang center. For more storage, add accessories, such as spice racks and cookbook holders.

6. Store spice bottles one deep, on their sides with labels visible, in shallow drawers, instead of stacking them, says organization consultant Ginny Scott of California Closets in Portland, Oregon. The best location for spice storage is below a cooktop or to the side of your range. The flavor of spices stored above a cooking surface may be adversely affected by the heat.

7. Claim shallow storage spaces. It's easier to see what's on hand when items aren't hidden behind each other.

8. Divide your drawer space. Adjustable inserts help organize flatware and other items inside your drawers. When designing custom drawer space, specify shallow drawers to store utensils one deep for easy viewing.

9. Choose full-extension pullouts. Drawers and trays that extend fully allow the use of back corners without having to reach deep into cabinets to retrieve a pot or small appliance. You may prefer drawers because they save having to first open a set of doors.

10. Attach racks to the inside of cabinet doors to boost storage options. Be sure to allow enough clearance within your cabinets for racks that tidily stow paper products.

11. Adjust shelves to fit specific contents. Choose adjustable shelves that can be as widely or closely spaced as necessary. Professional organizers recommend measuring your stacked dishes to determine the shelf height your dishware requires.

12. Make the most of between-shelf spaces. Wire baskets that hang from shelves let you fill unclaimed "air space" with more food items, dishware, or linens.

13. Retrofit cabinets with tray dividers, slide-out bins, and plate stackers. Bins are especially useful for containing and organizing small items, such as tea bags, spice packets, and gelatin boxes.

14. Avoid stacking or nesting items that fit badly together, such as cups with handles. Use cup hooks that attach to the bottom of an upper shelf, and pull out for access.

15. Keep things conveniently out in the open. Pot racks make use of space above an island. Keep in mind that pots displayed on a rack look picture-perfect only when they aren't used much.

16. Store shallow items, such as cutting boards and platters, upright. Even narrow spaces next to your range or your sink can be used in this manner. Use dividers to separate items for easier retrieval.

17. Put unused space to work. Incorporate shallow drawers into the toe-kick space below lower cabinets to hold a folding step stool, dustpan, or newspapers for recycling.

18. Fill in the space under a cooktop with a tilt-out tray for spices and roll-out trays for pots and pans. Or, slide in a movable cart with shelves to accommodate cooking equipment.

19. Wrap storage around plumbing lines and ductwork. A wire unit fits around the water lines and drain pipe under a sink, a handy spot for cleaning supplies. (Avoid storing food items in areas that may get too warm.)

20. Add shelves or niches to the end of a cabinet run. The side of an island or cabinet is a prime spot for storing cookbooks and displaying kitchen collectibles.

There are many materials used for countertops, laminate, ceramic and porcelain tile, marble, granite, stainless steel, synthetic epoxy compounds and hardwoods. One of the newest materials to be used for countertops in the residential market is concrete. What advantages does a concrete countertop provide to the homeowner - primarily the ability to create a unique aspect of your room. Unlike most countertop materials concrete has the advantage that you can embed objects in such as a piece of ceramic or porcelain tile to act as a trivet or a cutting board which is level with the surface. Concrete can be cast into almost any shape imaginable and it can be textured or polished. It is possible to have sinks cast directly in the concrete countertop or you can choose to have a surface or undermount sink made of another material.

Concrete generally compares in price per square foot with marble and granite. The price is based on the complexity of the form, any embedded objects and the surface finish rather than the actual size of the countertop. When shopping for a concrete countertop it is important to visit the manufacturer and discuss the details.

Edges of a concrete countertop can be finished with traditional styling and shapes, but with concrete, it is also possible to provide decorative inlays such as brass or stainless steel strips.

Depending on the manufacture and the shape of the required countertop it can be formed directly in place or at the manufacture’s facility. Having it manufactured in a controlled environment production facility, generally provides a better product.

The coloring of concrete is accomplished by blending color pigments into the concrete mix. Hence, the color is not on the surface but is throughout the countertop.

It is important to point out that a concrete countertop is not created with general purpose concrete available in 60 pound bags at your local home improvement center. Depending on the manufacturer the concrete will have epoxies and materials such as fiberglass added to the blend to provide strength.

Surprisingly, concrete countertops are generally not recommended for outdoor use. Freezing problems in cold climates and UV problems in very sunny climates can cause problems with the finish.

A concrete countertop is not made to be a cutting surface. Besides the fact that you can scratch the finish with a knife blade, it will destroy the knife blade edge as well. As a cutting surface, concrete is no different than natural stones such as marble or granite. Concrete also reacts in the same manner as granite to excessive heat. Areas that experience excessive heat may flake.

It is important to apply a good finished sealer to concrete to avoid possible staining by acid based products such as red wine, vinegar, tomato and lemon juice. Some manufacturers use an epoxy finish that is actually harder than the concrete itself. Other’s use a penetrating sealer and wax combination.

How to Refacing Kitchen Cabinets

Have you been thinking of giving your kitchen a facelift? If so, consider refacing your cabinets instead of purchasing and installing new ones. It only takes a few hours to reface kitchen cabinets and it’s much more affordable than replacing them.

Cleaning

Before you reface your cabinets, you will need to clean them thoroughly. Food residue, heat and grease build up on kitchen cabinets.

* If you remove the doors of your cabinets, be sure to label them so you can return them to the proper place. Do not paint over or sand off the markings. The holes for the hinges will need to match when you reattach them.
* Use rubber gloves and protective eye wear when using cleaners and solvents.
* Place painter's drop sheets on appliances, countertops and floors to protect them.
* Carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions when using any type of cleaner.
* Always use a clean cloth when cleaning cabinets.
* Once the cabinets have been cleaned, rinse well. If the rinse water or cloth becomes dirty, repeat the cleaning process.
* Allow wooden cabinets to dry thoroughly before continuing the project.

Stripping and Refinishing

After your cabinets have been cleaned, they may still look dull and grimy. If this is the case, consider refinishing or painting them. Stripping cabinets is very similar to refinishing furniture. It’s not hard, but does take a little time.

You’ve already discovered that working on a cabinet that’s attached to the wall is awkward and messy. Consider removing the cabinets for the stripping and refinishing process. If you choose to leave the cabinets on the wall, remember that it’s going to take some time and you won’t be able to use them.

Use a semi-paste or gel stripper on cabinets. These types of strippers drip less when used on a vertical surface. Before purchasing stripper, take note of the type of finish currently on the cabinets. It will be one of several materials and most of them will look the same to someone who is not an expert.

Determining the Existing Finish
To determine the type of finish that is currently on your cabinets, use these tests:

* Shellac – Use denatured alcohol and apply a few drops. If the finish dissolves almost instantly, it is shellac.
* Wax – Apply a minimal amount of turpentine, which will dissolve wax.
* Polyurethane or Varnish – These finishes can be stripped using paint or varnish stripper.
* Paint – If your cabinets are painted, you will need to determine if the paint is oil or water based. Use denatured alcohol on a clean cloth and rub briskly. If the paint comes off, it is water based. Never paint over water based paint with oil based. To refinish your cabinets with oil-based paint, you will have to completely strip them and use a primer.
* Formica or Vinyl – If your cabinets are finished with Formica or vinyl, do not attempt to paint or refinish them. You will need to hire a professional or replace them with new cabinets.

Before you start stripping, cover all appliances, countertops and floors with a painters drop sheet in order to protect them.

Preparation

Patch all holes, nicks and scratches with wood filler and allow it to dry well. Sand lightly so the wood filler blends into the cabinet surface. If you’re painting your cabinets, sand lightly, remove all residue and apply a coat of primer.

Cabinet Hardware

The hardware on your existing cabinets will need a thorough cleaning to get rid of dirt and grease. Place the hardware in a solution of soap and hot water and allow it to soak for one hour. Scrub gently with a soft bristled scrub brush and rinse. After the hardware is dry, polish with the proper cleaner. For instance, if the cabinet hardware is brass, use a brass polish.

If your hardware is worn or still looks dull after cleaning, you may need to replace it. Now that it’s been removed from the cabinets is a great time to give your cabinets a complete makeover. There are many beautiful pulls, knobs and hinges available at hardware stores and home building centers.

When shopping for new cabinet hardware, choose a style that will look great in your kitchen. If you own an older, traditional style home, choose brass, antiqued brass, nickel or pewter. If your home is newer, choose contemporary hardware such as enameled, glass, glossy metal or hardware that has a theme. This will allow the cabinet hardware to blend into your kitchen décor.

Molding

Set off your refaced cabinets with molding. Choose a contrasting finish or buy unfinished molding and finish it yourself. There is a wide range of moldings available on today’s market. Choose one that will blend into your kitchen décor.

Now that your cabinets are completely refaced, stand back and enjoy the new look of your kitchen. You will be amazed at the fresh, new look.

Comforters and Duvets

Placed as the top layer of bedding, comforters offer warmth with style. Many people have a wardrobe of comforter covers that allow them to change the look of the bed as often as they choose.

Comforter and duvet are both common terms for lush bedcoverings filled with down, feathers, cotton, wool, silk, or hypoallergenic synthetics.

Washable comforters, often sold in complete bed sets that include sheets and bed skirts, do not have removable covers.

Duvets are made to be encased in a removable duvet cover -- a giant pillowcase -- to protect the duvet and keep it clean.

Down Fill: Unless you are allergic to down, consider a quality down-filled comforter. With proper care, a down comforter will last 8 to 10 years. Goose down is best because the large clusters have better (fluffing) than duck down. Although white and gray goose down give the same service, gray may show through a light-colored duvet.

To eliminate blankets, a bedspread, and perhaps even the top sheet from your bed-making routine, choose a duvet covered with a washable duvet cover. The cover acts as the top sheet (it should be laundered at least weekly), thus allowing you to make the bed by giving the entire duvet a good shake and smoothing.

Cleaning Tips: Down comforters used daily should be dry-cleaned at least annually. Duvet covers should be laundered weekly if used in place of a top sheet; or, several times a year at the very least.

Synthetic comforters generally can be machine washed following manufacturer's directions. If you own another type of natural-filled comforter, such as wool or cotton, check the label or launder at a professional laundry that has larger-capacity machines and experience in cleaning bedding.

When it came to three-car garages, only 13% parked three cars. . So, if we don't park cars in our garages, what do we use them for?

Based on nearly twenty-five years of assisting our clients in organizing homes and offices in North America, I can attest to the fact that a large percentage of garage owners consider their garage a convenient on-site storage facility, or major irritation, often an embarrassment. Not because of the age or condition of the car parked there, but because of the clutter ? frequently moved from one garage to another.

One of the major principles of our company is Clutter is Postponed Decisions® -- and what better place to store postponed decisions than a garage? So how do you get rid of the clutter? Consider these five tips:

1) Design your vision. Create in your mind a picture of how the garage would look if you got rid of the clutter. If that's impossible for you, think of how you would feel if you could actually park your car in the garage? Perhaps you could allow houseguests to get directly into your car in the garage without driving it to the front door in order to avoid their seeing the ness. Or, maybe you could find the barbeque utensils you need in a few seconds instead of having to buy new ones!

2) Eliminate your excuses. Disorganization can range from circumstantial to chronic. It doesn't really matter what caused the mess ? they may very well be legitimate. The question is how much longer are you willing to put up with the situation? If you can't do it yourself, resolve to get help. After hiring us to help him clean up his garage, a client said, "I can't believe I drove into my garage every day for three years chastising myself that I hadn't done anything with all that clutter. For a few hundred dollars, it was done ? and I didn't even have to do it. I wonder what took me so long?"

3) Commit your time. Decide when you will get started on solving the problem. A client recently hired us to clean her garage. When it was over she commented, "That was a lot different that I thought it would be." "How?" I asked. "For one thing," she replied, "I thought it would take four weekends." We were done in six hours. The first and simplest step is to identify a specific place to put the items you find that you no longer need or want. (Donating unused but useable items to a local charity, selling them on e-Bay, or having a garage sale, if you're into such things, will not only make you feel better, it can even earn or save you money.

4) Select your tools. Choose the right tools for what you want to store. Two of the most effective solutions in a garage are shelving and hooks. They don't have to be costly to be functional, but if you dream of having a garage that is aesthetically pleasing, there are a variety of attractive and function options. In order to determine what size of storage units you need, use the most basic or organizing principles: Group like items together. Then determine if you really need or want that many empty boxes, garden tools you never use, or appliances you never really liked anyway. Check out organizing, discount, hardware, and home and garden stores and catalogs of an amazing variety of equipment.

5) Maintain your success. That old adage "A place for everything and everything in it's place" sounds admirable, but for most of us, it's just impossible. In the rush of everyday living, things just get messy ? and that includes garages. But if there IS a place for everything, cleaning it up presents no major challenges, and getting other members of the family to help is easier too!

Loggers leave behind about 50% of each tree, cluttering the landscape but providing you with free firewood. With a chain saw and a wood splitter, you can tailor your firewood to the dimensions of your fireplace. There's considerably less competition for this free firewood in early spring than there is during the cooler seasons.

So go ahead and let your thoughts turn to springtime, but get a jump on next fall now, too. When the cool weather returns, you'll be glad to have your seasoned firewood waiting for you.

Preparation needed when you're moving households

Moving households, whether it is due to a job transfer or upgrading your home, and whether moving across country or across town, is an expensive proposition. Even when a new employer sponsors a relocation, there are hidden or un-thought-of expenses such as tipping or registering your vehicle in a new state. Here are six ways to reduce expenses during your next move:

1. Boxes, boxes, boxes
Asking your local grocery, drug, or liquor store for their empty boxes is certainly one way to save money. You could easily spend $100 or more when buying new boxes. Consider visiting an apartment complex the first weekend of the month when new tenants are likely to move in. Tenants will be eager to rid themselves of their unpacked boxes and you can score by taking them off their hands. If your employer is paying for the move, be sure to save and store your new boxes for future use.

Buy your packaging tape at a hardware store instead of a grocery store or office supply store. It can save you up to $5 per roll! And remember to be nice to whomever is helping you move, pack books in a few smaller boxes instead of one big box!

2. Truck Rentals
If you are ambitious enough to move yourself, be sure to comparison shop weeks in advance of your move to get the best prices on truck rentals.

At the time this article was written, the following online price quotes were researched from well-known companies offering truck rentals. Be careful to investigate how the company charges for mileage. Another hidden charge that you may not be aware of is that of dropping off the truck in a different city/location from where it was rented. Inquire with the truck rental store or website if there are special promotions or discounts for being a AAA or AARP member. Do call your insurance agent before you reserve any truck to determine if your homeowner's insurance will cover any damage to your furniture and if your auto insurance will cover the truck. This will save you worry and money, if you don't need to purchase additional insurance from the rental company.

As an example, you could expect to tpay the following charges for a 400-mile move:

Each of these companies does a great job of up-selling boxes, tape, hand truck rentals, and moving quilt rentals on their websites and in their stores. The boxes and tape can be purchased much cheaper if you plan in advance.

In this scenario, Uhaul is the clear winner, but this is NOT always the case. Prices will vary due to availability, timing, and distances.

And, don't forget ? you are responsible for paying for the gas in the truck, which can be an exorbitant cost with current gas prices. Ask the rental company for the average mile-per-gallon of the truck when you are reserving it to estimate this cost.

3. Storage
Temporarily storing your belongings may be a necessary expense. There are a lot of options with storage facilities and you will want to weigh each aspect carefully. For example, if you are always strapped for cash, and there is the slightest chance thay you will not be able to make the payment in a timely fashion, your belongings may be confiscated! Don't risk signing a contract with a storage company if you aren't confident you can make the payments. An alternate option here is to use your credit card for the recurring monthly costs, but ONLY if you pay off the balance in full each month.

When choosing a storage facility, consider the companiy's reputation, whether they have climate controlled units (if this is important to you), and what security the company can promise. Having easy access 24 hours a day may also be a key attribute for you depending on your circumstances.

If you are renting a truck to move your belongings, be sure to ask what partnership pricing they have with a local storage facility. Sometimes storage can be obtained for as little as $1 for the first month with a 2-month minimum contract when you rent a truck at the same time. Buy a padlock for your storage unit at your local hardware store to save spending 3-times the amount at the facility.

4. Packing Fragile Belongings
As with boxes, packing materials to protect fragile belongings can be expensive. A cost effective and space efficient tip is to pack these breakable items in your bathroom and kitchen towels, throw rugs, blankets, bed linens, and even shower curtains! This is a much better alternative to newspaper, which leaves ink residue behind. All of your linens can be washed and folded once you have moved into your new home.

In an easily identifiable place such as a drawer of a piece of furniture, be sure to pack a complete change of clothes for you and your family members, toiletries, a complete set of bed linens, and toilet paper. This way, you won't be panicked trying to find the necessities when your first apprive at your destination.

5. Utilities and Address Changes
Remember to cancel your old utility services, start new utility services, and change your address. You may uncover some forgotten money when canceling services if you were required to pay a deposit when you started your service. Be sure to end the services the day AFTER you move out. This may incur a few dollars of extra costs, but typically these companies can not ensure a cut off time, and you don't want to be stuck without electricity or hot water while you are still in your place. On the same note, you may wish to schedule set-up of your utilities at your new residence the day before you arrive to be sure everything will be working when you arrive. Here is a list of common utility companies to contact. The property management company or Chamber of Commerce in the area where you are moving can give you local company numbers.

1) Add 1/3 cup baking soda to a wash cycle as a bleach booster or to the rinse cycle for cleaner smelling laundry.

2) To remove black scuff marks from floor, rub them with a paste of baking soda and water.
3) Make a paste of baking soda and water and rub on insect bites to relieve itching.

4) Remove coffee and tea stains by scrubbing pots or cups with baking soda and a plastic scouring pad.

5) Use a solution of water and baking soda to clean and deodorize the inside of your microwave.

6) Put a few spoonfuls in a cup of water in the microwave, boil for two minutes, then wipe down the inside with a sponge.

7) Clean fiberglass showers and tubs with baking soda sprinkled on a sponge. Sponge clean and wipe dry.

8) Soak sour smelling dishcloths and sponges in water and baking soda solution.

Looking for tubs or showers ? You need a little help to know better before choosing the right one. At a commercial spa, it's the employees who pamper you. In your home spa, specialty fixtures do the work.

Tub Talk
Do you want the calm that comes from floating in a tranquil pond or the invigoration that comes from being pummeled by a waterfall? Whichever you prefer, there's a bathtub for you. The most typical upgrade is to a bathtub with whirlpool jets. The jets force out air to create a massaging effect, and individual jets can be adjusted to hit target areas, such as your neck or back. Many tubs offer a pressure control feature so you can adjust jet flow. If your favorite spa service is a massage, this is the tub for you. For many people, one disadvantage of a whirlpool tub is the inability to use bath oils or salts, which cause bacteria growth in the jet tubes.

While whirlpool jets have been the rage for the last two decades, they now need to make way for air systems -- the latest and greatest bathtub feature. These tubs have about 30 to 70 small holes drilled around the radius of the tub, with each hole emitting a soft bubble. This tub experience would be akin to sitting in a vat of sodium bicarbonate. Best of all, you can use bath additives with this feature. Some tubs come with both jets and the air system, but you can use bath additives only in conjunction with the air system.

For those who prefer a soak without the motion, a soaking tub is the answer. Popularized by the Japanese, soaking tubs are usually narrow and deep, so you can sit on a ledge and be submerged in water up to your neck. This is a space-saving solution for smaller bathrooms.

Some homeowners forego a tub in the bathroom in favor of a hot tub -- often located outdoors, just outside the master bathroom. Design consultant Rhonda Knoche, of Neil Kelly Designers-Remodelers, says her firm is doing this in many homes in the Portland, Oregon, area. Lots are usually wooded, so bathers can step outside in privacy. Knoche recommends smaller two-person tubs, because they are long and narrow and can snuggle up close to the house.

If you're upgrading to a special tub, don't forget to consider the accessories. A wide waterfall faucet allows water to cascade into the tub. A hand wand is essential for rinsing yourself off as well as cleaning the tub.

Shower Power
Tubs are the mainstay of traditional bathrooms, but today's home spa connoisseurs are basking in their custom showers. That may be because an oversize tub takes time to fill. Today's showerheads and sprays offer the massaging action of whirlpool jets without the wait.

In home spas, shower stalls are almost always separate from the tub, though it's common to see the tub deck extend into the shower stall to serve as a bench. Even in smaller, less-expensive bathrooms, a second showerhead is standard for couples who may want to shower together. The heads should be mounted on separate walls and tailored to the heights of the individuals. Knoche says even a 3- x 4-foot stall is big enough to justify a second head. You can find inexpensive standard showerheads with multiple settings -- including massaging action -- to replace the one that came with your bathroom.

Typical showerheads are positioned to hit the body first (in case you don't want to get your hair wet). For a drenching, whole-body shower, look to a rain dome. A rain dome is a wide-diameter head mounted on the ceiling; it emits a large volume of water but a gentle flow. For head-to-toe directed spray, install body jets. Between four and ten jets are positioned in a vertical column to reach all parts of your body.

If you're going to the effort to add specialty showerheads, be sure to include pressure-balance valves or the more accurate thermostatic valves. These valves control temperature, so when you turn the shower on, the water comes out at exactly the temperature you prefer.

Commercial spa aficionados frequently return home to request spa shower features, such as a steam shower. In a residential setting, a steam generator is built into the shower stall; two may be needed for an oversize stall. The moist steam rids your body of impurities and leaves you feeling refreshed. For maximum relaxation, include an oversize bench, long enough to lie down on. When not reclining during a steam, use the bench for sitting while you soak your tootsies in a whirlpool foot bath. The foot bath is recessed (or built up) in the shower stall floor. Jets focus on the feet. Use the feature as part of your overall shower or as a separate foot soak at the end of a hard day.

From Step-By-Step Basic Carpentry

Be prepared for strenuous labor when it comes time to hang drywall. The sheets are heavy, you'll be working in awkward positions, and you'll have to hold the sheets in place while you drive in nails or screws. It's tempting to rush the job, but you'll kick yourself later if you do sloppy work. Wide gaps between drywall sheets take a long time to tape, and nobody wants nails popping out later. Here's how to do the job correctly the first time.

Tape measure, good ladders or scaffolding, hammer or drill with drywall-type screwdriver attachment, drywall taping blades.

Tool Tip

There are hammers made especially for drywall installation. They are light, for easy handling; they have wide heads so it's easier to make a dimple without damaging the paper; and their heads are tilted a bit for access into corners. You may not use one very often, but it will make hanging and, subsequently, taping easier.

Drywall Screwdriver Or Dimpler Bit. A drywall screwdriver has an adjustable bit that, once set correctly, will drive the bit to the correct depth, then stop. A less expensive, and just as good, option is a dimpler bit that you can attach to a drill.

Step-by-Step

1. Nail or screw according to code
Local building codes specify how many nails or screws you should use to hang drywall and in what sort of pattern. Codes vary not only from region to region, but from room to room; for example, more fasteners may be required in bathrooms. Check with your building department.

Many professionals don't nail in pairs, but there is good reason to do so: If one nail pops through the paper, the other will hold.

For ceiling panels, the general practice is to pair nails at 12-inch intervals around the perimeter and 12 inches along each joist. Requirements are less stringent for walls. If you don't use adhesive, install two nails into the wall studs at 16-inch intervals and a single nail every 7 inches along edges. When using adhesive, install two nails at 24-inch intervals and one nail at 7 inches along the edge. Keep adhesive 6 inches away from top and bottom of sheet.

1a. Setting nailheads correctly

If you simply drive in a nail flush, you will not be able to cover over it with joint compound. If you drive the nail too deeply, you will break the paper on the drywall. When the paper is broken, the nail won't hold; it tears right through the gypsum inner core.

Try to drive the nail so the nailhead is set into a slightly dimpled surface. No portion of the nailhead should protrude above the surface of the drywall.

To test if your nails are driven deeply enough, run a taping blade along the surface of the wall. You should not feel any nailheads click against the blade as you pull it across. Pull out any nails that miss a joist or stud. Swat the hole with your hammer to dimple it.

1b. Attaching drywall with screws

If you are using screws, the same principles apply as with nailing: The screw head must be set below the surface, but it must not break the paper. This is difficult to do with a simple screwdriver bit. Use a dimpler bit or a drywall screwdriver (see Tool Tip Box). Always drive in screws perpendicular to the sheet or their heads will tear the paper.

2. Install the ceiling sheets

Hang drywall on the ceiling before installing the wall sheets. Start in a corner and against one side of the room and work out from there, keeping the panels perpendicular to the joists. Take time before you start to locate joists and mark their locations on the sheet and the wall. Searching for joists while holding the sheet up with your head is no fun.

The quickest, but most difficult, way to install drywall on a ceiling is to set the panel in place and support it with your head, leaving your hands free to hold and drive nails or screws. Wearing a baseball cap greatly minimizes pulled hair and a sore head.

To make things easier, construct one or two 2x2 T-braces to use as props. Or, rent a drywall hoist. Either solution will make the process easier and result in a much neater job.

3. Install the wall sheets

Once the ceiling panels are up, hang sheets on the walls. If you are installing sheets horizontally, begin with the upper sheets, butting them firmly against the ceiling drywall. Make sure all vertical seams hit studs. Butt the lower panels firmly against the upper panels, tapered edge to tapered edge. Raise up sheets tightly with a wedge or lever.

If you are installing sheets vertically, check the tapered edges to make sure they fall midway across a stud. If they don't, either cut the drywall or attach pieces of lumber to the stud to give yourself a nailing surface for the next piece.

Overlap pieces at corners, as shown above. Finish the job by adding the filler pieces, measuring and cutting each piece to size. Make sure each piece has at least two nailing members to support it.

Bedroom Decorating - Easy and Cheap

Did you ever wake up one morning, look around your bedroom and want to pull the cover back over your head? Join the club. Humans are one of the few creatures that frequently rearrange and re-do their living space. Bedrooms are the most frequent redecorating candidate. Every so often, for reasons unknown to many, we look at that cozy nest we carefully created and think "ugh." It's boring, it's outdated, I'm sick of that color. Grand visions of a totally gutted and remodeled space may fill your mind, until you look at your bank balance. Don't be glum! Redecorating doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg!

The quickest way to a new look is a splash of paint. Even if you use the same color (because you had paint left over), a fresh coat of color reinvigorates the room, makes it look cleaner, newer. If you've grown tired of your wall color, choose a new one, drape protective cloths over the furniture and get rolling. The endorphins pumping through your veins after painting the whole room may just fire up some other decorating ideas for your bedroom.

One reason a fresh coat of paint reinvents a room is that the different color gives the space a whole new identity. The same idea applies to your bedding. If your budget is extremely limited, you might start by adding new pillow shams. Usually sold as a separate piece from comforters, sheets, or pillowcases, a sham is a highly decorative pillow covering. When making the bed in the morning, you slip your covered pillow into the sham-remove the sham at night before you go to sleep. If you find a great deal on pillow shams, buy a bunch-you can fill them with plain foam pillows and give your bed a luxurious look by piling them on.

A new comforter or bedspread is another way to redecorate your bedroom inexpensively. Check local malls for discount linen stores, or browse the Internet for great deals on beautiful, but cheap comforters and bed skirts.

A simple way to create a coordinated look without spending a lot of money is to use bed sheets to make window treatments. Probably you are sick of that old furniture you have been sitting on for the last who knows how many years. Even the color of the walls seems now a distant memory of the one you decided to paint them a year and a half ago. Nobody would like to ask you what you think of your kitchen cabinets in fear of you throwing something heavy to them in response. Well, if one or all of the above is true, perhaps it is time to consider a house makeover.

Next time there is sunshine outside, open the windows and try to observe the space you live in. What in there does not seem to fit? How do the walls look when bright sunlight hits them directly? Does your furniture seem used or filthy? If you have not had a chance to take such a close and careful look yet, next time you get a chance just sit somewhere in the room you spend most of your time while awake and pay attention to every single detail. Then take a piece of paper and write down all those things you would like to change. If your bank account does not have the appropriate funds for the expensive makeover you are secretly admiring on the glossy pages of your favorite magazine, do not despair. There is still room for you to change what you do not want to continue having and you got a pair of useful hands and legs to help you reach your goal.

First decide on the walls color. Does it seem that a brighter color or another type of paint would work better? If yes, the most inexpensive but drastic change you can invest on, is changing the color of your walls. Place everything carefully into another room, cover the floor and the window or door frames with that blue tape you will purchase from the local tool shop and paint a small part of the wall with the color samples you can get for free from any home supplies store. Which one does it seem to be of your liking? If you now are sure that the bright yellow you wanted for your living room is not a good choice, go with something less extreme and you will be amazed with the result. You do not need to have any experience before painting your walls. You just need to do it carefully. Your local suppliers store employees will give you all the advice and equipment you will need and the rest is your deal. If you are still insecure of the outcome your effort will have, a good idea is to ask a friend that has done it before to come and help you out. You can offer dinner or a movie in exchange for their help and before you know it a group of people will be ringing your bell for a chance to paint that walls you want to revive.

Now that the walls are ready, check your furniture. First the heavy big ones and then continue with the smaller ones. If these are definitely of your liking, then clean them up and keep them in the room. You can change their place and move them around depending on the focal point you want to have inside the room. Start Organizing Your Home

If you look around your home, you probably see lots of clothes. Correct ? You’ve got clothes in closets, you’ve got clothes in piles (meaning to put them away and not having time, eventually just pulling them out of the pile and wearing them), and you’ve got clothes in laundry baskets. You might even have rumpled clothes in the dryer or (heaven forbid!) the washer. If it’s the former, the clothes are only rumpled. If it’s the latter, they’re probably rumpled AND smelly and (potentially) mildew-y. Ooops! If you don’t have a laundry room but have a laundry closet (with room for the washer, dryer, and some shelves), I’m betting you haven’t seen the top of your dryer for weeks or even months. It’s covered in rumpled clothes and towels, right?

Have you guessed where we’re starting? That’s right! The laundry area of your home. And here’s why: if you get your laundry room cleaned and organized, you’ll be much more apt to actually DO the laundry that plagues you and helps your home to be disorganized. And because you won’t want to undo the work you’ve done in the laundry room, you’re more likely to fold the laundry when it’s done, and put it away. There’s something that’s a breath of fresh air about a straightened laundry room, sort of like when you walk in to a closet where everything is hanging neatly.

Start with small steps:

Can you see the floor? No? Then pick up what’s on the floor and put it in laundry baskets. If you don’t have enough laundry baskets to accomplish this, then just sort the things in to piles outside the laundry room. I make piles of light clothes, whites, darks, and towels/rags.

Can you see the top of the dryer? If not, put the excess clothes in the aforementioned piles. Grab one rag to dust and have two plastic grocery bags, one to collect junk, and the other for later. Dust the dryer from the lint leftovers and use a little window cleaner if it doesn’t come off readily. Don’t neglect the area where the “start” button is, that can be grimy, too!

Ok - now you’ve got your washer & dryer cleaned off. Congratulations!

Now take a critical look at your supply shelves. Do you have empty bottles or boxes lying around from spent detergent and/or fabric softener? Clean those out. Use that grocery bag that you’ve put excess dryer lint in and pitch those empties. Then organize what’s left. If you need to add things to your shopping list, now is the time—now you know what you’ve got and what you need to buy. When you organize your supplies, I recommend putting the detergent and any liquid softener above the (gasp!) washer. Make it easy to reach. Put the dryer sheets over or on the dryer why reach more than you have to? If your shelves are higher than you’d like, use the top ledge of your washer & dryer to hold supplies! I’ve never seen a washer and dryer that didn’t butt up to a wall for the electrical plugs they need. So use that space to your advantage. Put the detergent box or bottle on the top of the washer, along with whatever other washing supplies you have.

If you have wire shelves above your washer & dryer, you’ve got a built-in place to hang a trash bag. Use that extra grocery sack and cut one of the handles in half. Then tie those two ends around some of the wire shelf and use the bag to collect dryer lint and empty containers from your emptied laundry supplies. When it’s full, cut it down and put it in the trash and put up a new one.

Now look at your floor. Does it need sweeping? If so, grab a broom and sweep. It won’t take you more than 5 minutes and you’ll feel much better about your room and your work, especially if something you’ve just washed falls on the floor as you’re transferring stuff to the dryer.

Congratulations! You’ve done the preliminary work of organizing your home, you've won the battle in your laundry room! Take a 15 minute break and enjoy this victory. Then start the task of doing the excess laundry that you’ve been collecting, one pile at a time. When the first is done, swap it out immediately to your dryer or to hangers, if that’s more appropriate. Take it one pile at a time, in other words, small steps! Soon, you’ll find that it really only takes 5-10 minutes to fold warm clothes from the dryer and put them in laundry baskets, ready to transfer to the appropriate rooms, closets, and drawers. Now that you have some extra time, you can start on another room. How to start organizing your home wasn't all that hard afterall!

1. Clean up
Start cleaning each surface of the house, beginning with the floor, the wall, and then tables.
After that tried to avoid re-decorate the same pattern or the same old decoration. Think about the new one, something you like or unique. If you don't have any idea - think pretty decoration you ever seen or same as your friend's house which is you think it is pretty look.

2. Empty Canvas

8. Acessories

9. The shelf
If a room inside your house have a table and a cupboard, you could hanging in the wood shelf on the wall to the room. This will make your room more pretty. You could place and manage materials such as ceramics, crystal, and the unique small glasses or books in the shelf.

You could carry out all tips above in stages and not necessary finished it all in one full day.

Most people think hard to get their room more fresher looks when somebody will come and see their home especially their rooms. Don't worry about this happening to you, I have 5 tips that you can do fast to make your room more fresher looks and comfortable.

Here's five fast tips for when that re-decorating demon strikes and you haven't the budget or time to do much. You can likely do all of these ideas for significantly less than $50, but because they are simple, I'll explain along the way what makes the difference.

1) Take a buch of Fresh Flowers.
You don't need a $50 bouquet to make a room, but a stale look will get an instant boost with a bit of living, breathing, greenery. Consider a $20 tropical, large enough to fill in an empty corner, and spend another $20 on a colorful bunch of fresh cut flowers (if you shop well, you can even get the vase). Or you can pick some beautiful flowers from your garden. This will give your room instant punch!

2)Bowl of Fruit & Table Cloth
If you're at the market anyway, don't overlook the zest and color that a large bowl of fresh fruit lends to the kitchen, dining room, or even the coffee table. Great look that works well in all decors; fill a pottery dish with a variety, or a tall glass vase with a single fruit (ie: lemons or limes) or even line up a row of green apples along the coffee or dining table for a contemporary feel. And since fruit is inexpensive, give yourself a shot of change by selecting a new table linen in the trendiest color of the season to give your room a real lift or invest in a crisp white or cream cloth for a classic look.

3)Baskets
You don't have to be a country girl (or guy) to appreciate the cozy look of baskets. Even the most modern room can benefit from a bit of wood or rattan. But the main purpose here is to hide clutter. You'll feel so refreshed if you add a few baskets to fill with magazines, toys or hobby material. It's the easiest way to contain the everyday clutter that you can't stow away. And clearing space is always a good look!

4)Throw Cushions
I'd bet you could find two throw cushions for less than $50, so if you do, add a throw blanket as well. Cheap and shamefully easy, this is the way to go if you're ready to make more of a statement. Great opportunity to bring some contrast into a dull room, consider light pillows for a dark room, dark pillows for a light one, and absolutely try adding a trendy color to a neutral room. And at this price, you can change it next season!

5)Paint
Admittedly for the more ambitious, this is a fantastic way to create a stunning look in little time. However, this is an article on FAST ideas, so let's not tackle the whole room right now. If company's coming this weekend, try a new look by painting a feature wall a stunning but complementary color (ie: the fireplace wall, that blank wall behind the couch?you get the idea.) Or even tape off a smaller section (this is called color blocking) to focus attention on a collection of pictures, or behind a mirror, or around the fireplace.

People sometime confuse when they decided to buy the Kitchen Sink. They do not know which one is the best and suitable with their need. The criteria of Choosing from a variety of styles, sizes, and materials for a sink that fits your kitchen needs.

What are Sink Materials we need to know :

* Stainless steel continues to be improved and upgraded. The newer 16- and 18-gauge sinks are thicker and less noisy than their less-expensive predecessors. Stainless-steel sinks contain a percentage of chromium and nickel, which is indicated by numbers such as 18/10 (18 percent chromium and 10 percent nickel). The metal imparts a rich glow and adds corrosion resistance. Finishes range from a mirrorlike shine to a satin luster.

* Cast iron is a sturdy material that is enamel fired on an iron form. These durable sinks lessen noise and vibration more than other materials but can be heavy for installation. An added advantage is that cast iron sinks are available in a wide range of colors.

* Composite sinks can be made of quartz, granite, or other materials mixed with an acrylic- or polyester-resin base. They usually feature speckled color, resistance to stains and scratches, and easy care. They also can be expensive.

* Vitreous china, originally made for bathrooms, is now also used for kitchen sinks. The glazed clay material is hard and nonporous with a glasslike shine. Similar to fireclay in construction, durability, and cost, vitreous china is less porous because of the nature of the construction process. It is easier to mold double bowl sinks from vitreous china than from fireclay.

* Solid surfacing, made from a polyester or acrylic base, is chosen for its stonelike appearance and easy care.

What are Bowls and Mounting you need to know :

* Single-bowl sinks can be small and efficient or large and spacious. One sink may be easier to clean and offer a streamlined look. However, if you are used to double-bowl sinks when doing dishes or preparing food, then a single sink may not be for you.

* Double-bowl sinks offer many options in size, depth, and bowl placement. Study your kitchen needs to determine what works for you. Standard 33-inch twin double-bowl sinks provide 13-inch-wide basins and don't accommodate large cookware, yet there are many other options that feature small side sinks for food prep and disposal usage.

* Triple-bowl sinks usually have two large bowls with a smaller bowl centered between for food preparation.

* A smaller salad or bar sink is also sometimes placed at a different location such as a center island for salad preparation. These small sinks are also used in bars and butler's pantries.

* Depth: Standard depth is 8 inches; budget-model sinks often measure only 6 or 7 inches deep, while high end models can be as deep as 10 or 11 inches. If you use large or awkward cookware, select a sink to fit your needs. For ergonomic reasons, you may also wish to consider the height of the person using the sink when considering the depth of the sink bowl.

* Width: Bar sinks may be as narrow as 12 inches while full-size sinks can stretch to 40 inches and more. Do consider that large sinks require a sacrifice of counter space.

* Sink mounting affects the appearance of the sink as much as sink configuration does. Easy-to-install top-mount sinks have a ridge that fits over the countertop. Flush-mount sinks, which are level with the countertop, provide a neat look but don't catch splashes as well as the top-mount.

* Under-mount sinks are recessed below the countertop surface and work especially well with solid-surface countertop materials. Integral sinks where the sink and countertop is fused as one, are made of solid-surface material or stainless steel.

* Trends: Two-sink kitchens are a trend with a purpose. They allow multiple cooks in a kitchen to prep, cook, and clean up with less interference, and are also a boon for anyone who entertains frequently.

Tips Choosing the right " Faucets "

* The right kitchen faucet makes cooking and cleaning easier while enhancing the room with an attractive but practical fixture.

* Finish: Chrome, easy-care brass, colors, and other decorative finishes are options to consider. Special features allow versatility.

* Height: Look for styles with tall gooseneck faucets that swivel out of the way, detachable hose-type faucets, and traditional-looking faucets that appear to be set flush but pull upward for additional height. Account for such tasks as filling and cleaning tall stockpots, as well as the style, depth, and finish of the sink and surrounding hardware.

* Spray: Do you prefer using a sprayer that's separate from the faucet? If not, does the sprayer fit securely into the faucet or is it heavy enough that it may "droop" over time?

* Preferences: What faucet features are most important? For example, do you like single handles or separate hot and cold controls? Keep in mind that many sinks are sold with predrilled holes for faucets and handles, which can affect either the sink or the faucet selection.

* Comparison shop: Visit several plumbing supply stores or home centers to compare styles, installation methods, faucets, and prices.

* Think about life span and maintenance. Faucets have an average life span of eight to 12 years with proper maintenance. Chrome faucets, most commonly used in kitchens, are the easiest to maintain.

Create a powerful focal point in a room by setting framed photos on tiered picture ledges.

Photo Displays
Black-and-white photos displayed in rows have a visual impact far greater than a simple arrangement right on the wall.
The layering of the photos and the projection of the ledges creates a depth that is visually arresting.

Materials and Instructions
What You Need:
* Picture ledges
* Black metal frames
* White mat board
* Mat-board cutter
* Straightedge
* Scrap board
* Curved accessories (such as vases or pottery)

Instructions:

Picture ledges (available through home furnishings stores and catalogs) provide the structure. We used 4-foot-wide ledges installed 18 inches apart. To avoid a cluttered look, frame photos in the same fashion.

We chose white mats in black metal frames, placing more than one photo within some of the frames. Lean the frames on the ledges, overlapping some frames without obscuring the picture.

Positioning bigger pieces low and to the left keeps the display from looking top-heavy. Accent the photos with curved accessories to soften the hard lines of the frames.

When using purchased frames, save money by cutting the mats yourself. A handheld mat cutter (shown at right) costs $20 to $40. The blade is set at a 45-degree angle to make beveled edges.

With a little practice against a straightedge, you can achieve fine straight cuts. Consider buying a cutter with guides etched on it for more precise starting and stopping. Always use scrap board beneath the mat when cutting.
