When interior designer Gregor D. Cann returned from a Caribbean vacation to yet another Boston snowstorm, he decided to turn up the heat inside his apartment with marigold orange walls.
"It's a very pungent color," Gregor says. "It's in your face--very hot." When bathed in this energetic hue, his Victorian architecture took on a decidedly contemporary and playful edge, which he reinforced with accessory choices.
Gregor suggests marigold for people who are dramatic and like to take decorating risks. The intensity of this color works in his apartment because the many ceiling and wall angles cast shadows, cutting down on the brightness. Plus, substantional white moldings, a white floor, and a white sofa temper the punch of the room.
For a plain room with boxier architecture, Gregory recommends using a less vibrant, muted color.
Because the bright walls visually filled up his living room, Gregor didn't want to add any other distinctive colors or lines that would compete with the orange. "Everything brought in is meant to downplay the intensity of the color," he says.
Most accessory colors blend with the walls, and they are arranged in straightforward grid patterns that are easy for the eye to understand. Design is always a balancing act, Gregor says. Go with a theme then break it apart, he adds. Decorating all in one style makes a room look staid.
