Before you decide what you might want to cover walls or more often recover them with, you will first want to assess what material your walls are made of. The two most common materials you will run across, as with ceilings, are plaster and drywall. If your house was built after the 1950s chances are slim that you will have plaster walls. Drywall had become incredibly popular by then. The ease with which it could be installed, the relative cost compared to plaster, and the appeal of square corners and level walls quickly eclipsed plaster as a wall-building material. Plaster walls began to come back into vogue after th 1960s, during the old home revival movement, when people started to appreciate the richness and stability of older materials.
There are other things you may run into besides plaster and drywall. Many kitchen and bathroom walls make use of ceramics tile and linoleum like products which are usually installed over drywall or plaster anyway but in your redecorating effort, you will be dealing mostly with the surface material. The Kitchen and bathroom where cleaning is a big issue, made ready use of tile and linoleum, which are easily cleaned. Removing and replacing large expanses of ceramics tile is much bigger job than what we generally define as a decorating project. However installing a few tiles above the kitchen or bathroom sink can be a small project that gives you dramatic results.
